One of the most prestigious books of critical literacies, Constructing Critical Literacies, edited by Muspratt, Luke and Freedback in 1997, states that contemporary times (they published this book in 1997!) demand new perspectives on literacy education. According to Luke and Freebody (Ibid., p.1), “critical literacy marks out a coalition of educational interests committed to engaging with the possibilities that the technologies of writing and other modes of inscription offer for social change, cultural diversity economic equity, ans political enfranchisement”. They also pinpoint that “literacy education can make a difference in students’ lives”. These authors/theories have helped us envision language education through other lenses, other perspectives and practices. Perspectives that certainly question the educational status quo in which we seem to be trapped in; perspectives that problematize a traditional, structuralist, positivist, scientific and authoritarian kind of teaching that often times silence our students by depositing knowledge that is obsolete and have no connection to their lives. We do hope that readers also find these perspectives in this book.
